Frequently Asked Questions
Registration
How long does the registration process take? Transfers? Leases?
Although it is often sooner, please allow four to six weeks to receive registrations, leases and transfers. Rush options are available by contacting the registration department.
What do I need to send?
Send a complete registration application including fees. Four current photos of the animal are required; one photo of each side, a front and a back. If the animal is already registered with another association, please send a copy of the papers. If it is not registered with another association, the breeder’s certificate must be completed along with a copy of the sire and dam’s papers if they are registered with another association other than PtHA.
What is a breeder’s certificate?
The breeder's certificate is on the application and is required to be completed if you do not provide outcross papers on the horse you are registering. It requires the dates the sire and dam were exposed to one another and the signatures of both the owners of the sire and dam at the time of breeding.
What are outcross papers?
Outcross papers are registration papers from any equine association. PtHA accepts papers from the following approved associations.
- Horse

- American Quarter Horse
- Hanoverian

My horse is registered with another association already. Can I register them with Pinto?
If your horse/pony/miniature is registered with a PtHA approved breed association, just send us a copy of their papers with a registration application, photos and fees. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL PAPERS! A breeder's certificate does not need to be completed in this case.
What are your qualifications to register as breeding stock?
- Solid color equines with documented color breed registered ancestry (within two generations).
- Solid color equines registered with an approved outcross color breed.
- Equines registered with an approved outcross breed registry or those that have two or more Pinto characteristics
What is a stallion breeding report?
A stallion breeding report is a form that lists all of the mares that your Pinto stallion has been exposed to for the year. If your stallion is Pinto registered and exposed to mares, you are required to send one in yearly to the office. There is a flat fee of $10 per year, if you are a member, no matter how many mares are listed, as long as the SBR is postmarked by December 31 of each year. Late SBR’s are $35. Stallion breeding reports are not required for sires that are not Pinto registered.
For example, if you have a double registered APHA/ PtHA stallion, you need to submit a stallion breeding report.
If you have a stallion that is only registered with APHA, no stallion breeding report is required.
Listed stallions with Pinto, such as a listed AQHA stallion, need to have a stallion breeding report submitted.
What is a Field Representative Registration?
At most Pinto shows, PtHA has Field Representatives who can inspect your horse and assign you a temporary Pinto number that allows you to show immediately and is good for three months after the date of issue. The Field Representative sends PtHA all of your paperwork and PtHA assigns you a permanent Pinto registration number. Please contact the show to make sure a Field Representative will be present.
Membership
How long does it generally take to receive your membership?
Please allow two to three weeks to receive your membership materials.
How do I obtain a membership?

Do I have to be a member of the Pinto Horse Association to show my horse?
At PtHA sanctioned shows, the owner of the horse must be a member in the same name as the registration. Open Division riders must carry an individual membership. Amateur riders must have an individual membership and an amateur and/or novice card. Youth riders must have a youth membership including walk/trot and leadline.
How do I find out about my Amateur/Novice status?
Your status is located on your membership card (if applied for). PtHA does not have a separate card for Amateur/Novice riders.
Do I need to take my membership card with me when I participate in a PtHA show?
Yes, you must take your card or a copy of you card with you.
